Are Dogs’ Paws Supposed to be Rough?

Dog's paws are often subjected to various forms of wear and tear as they walk and play on different surfaces, which can result in rough or dry paws. Similar to humans, dogs can suffer from blisters or torn paw pads, burnt paws from walking on pavement that’s too hot or cut themselves during playtime in dog runs especially when there could be stones hidden in grasses that we don’t notice.

Here are some reasons why a dog's paws may become rough:

  1. Natural wear and tear: Running, jumping, and walking on rough surfaces can cause the paws to become rough and calloused. This is a natural response to protect the paws from further damage

  2. Dry weather: Dry weather in Singapore can cause the paws to become dry and rough, just as it can with human skin. Especially during days with strong sunlight and high temperatures between 31-35 degree Celcius, our pavements and tarmac ground could burn your dogs’ paw pads. A general rule of thumb to check if a surface is too hot is to step on it with your bare feet or put your hand on it for 5 seconds and it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them too!

  3. Allergic Reactions and Infections: Allergic reactions to grass, pollen, pesticides, or other environmental irritants can cause a dog's paws to become red, irritated, and rough. Similarly, bacterial or fungal infections can cause rough, red, and itchy paws and it could be aggravated if your pup constantly licks and bites them.

  4. Inadequate grooming: Neglecting to clean and moisturize a dog's paws can cause them to become rough and dry. Make sure to inspect your pup’s paw pads regularly and check between their toes for any injuries or foreign objects. Trim the fur between your dog’s paw pads when it gets long, this would allow them to have a better grip of the ground when they run or play and preventing them from slipping and sliding which might lead to injury to their hips and joints.

  2. Apply Paw Soother before bedtime
Paw Soother is an organic, plant-based healing balm crafted to soothe, treat, heal, and protect your pup’s paws. Many customers have used baby socks after applying Paw Soother to prevent licking and to create an ultra healing environment.
It is ideal for treating, healing, & protecting against:

    • Scars & wound

    • Hyperkeratosis of the paw

    • Paw allergy symptoms

    • Extreme weather conditions

    • Dry & irritated elbows

In conclusion, it is normal for a dog's paws to be rough to some extent. However, if irritated paws are left untreated and dry, it can be very uncomfortable and painful for dogs. Many dogs will incessantly lick and chew their paws when they are in discomfort, thus causing more irritation and a perpetual cycle.

If you notice any signs of redness, swelling, or excessive roughness, it is best to consult a veterinarian to rule out any underlying health issues. Regular grooming, including washing and moisturizing, can help keep a dog's paws healthy and prevent roughness.
